The UNO-St. Claude Gallery is excited to announce a solo exhibition of new work by the University of New Orleans’ Department of Fine Arts Sculptor-in-Residence Aaron McNamee, titled “Mining the Domestic.” Through sculpture, installation, and prints, McNamee reflects on the sublime “accumulation of materials” that we use to maintain our bodies and lives. He states, “While the formation of natural caverns is slowly being created drip by drip over eons, our own caverns are overflowing even as we stand up and flush. (Drip by drip, flush by flush).” He parallels the primordial cavern with the body and the landfill, and acknowledges, “this meditation on occupying the world in all of its splendor and ignorance poses more problems than solutions.” McNamee’s work bypasses the passage of time in order to consider the summation of our domestic refuse today.
The UNO-St. Claude Gallery will host the opening reception for “Mining the Domestic” on Saturday, October 8th, from 6-9 PM. The exhibit will run from October 8 — November 6, 2016. The gallery’s regular hours are Sat-Sun, from 12-5 PM. Please direct any inquiries to Kathy Rodriguez at klrodri2@uno.edu, or call the gallery during open hours at (504) 948-6939.
