UNO-St. Claude Gallery to host a solo exhibition by James L Hayes sponsored by Culture Ireland.
We are extremely pleased to announce the exhibition, “A Near Visible Past,” a solo exhibition of new art works by James L Hayes, supported by the Culture Ireland I AM IRELAND ,1916 centenary year programme of International Cultural events.
Hayes presents a new body of work that is the culmination of ongoing research that was further developed during a residency at the Irish Museum of Modern Art, Dublin in 2015. Hayes’s new work reinvests a modernist sculptural language, whilst exploring aspects of the casting process as a means by which to interrogate the boundaries between artist, artisan and art object. This exhibition draws from Hayes’s early career experiences working in a renowned London fine art foundry, which is revisited in this exhibition in a new film work.
A Near Visible Past includes a series of unique exploratory sculptural pieces alongside documentary works that draw out the often incongruous relationships between finished art objects, and the industrial aspects of the processes that produce these revered objects.
Hayes’s broader research interests range from these contemporary interpretations of sculptural legacies to site-specific interventionist works that draw from traces of significant pasts and histories. Aside from sculpture as a primary medium, Hayes also creates kinetic, film and sound based installations.
Hayes has exhibited his work widely over the last 15 years, both nationally and internationally, whilst also developing site-specific public commissions and large-scale sculptural works and installations. He recently completed a residency at the Irish Museum of Modern Art in Dublin and his work was featured at the Supermarket Art Fair in Stockholm.
Hayes is also developing two large-scale public art works for the Arts Council of Northern Ireland & The Office of Public works in Ireland.
Hayes is a graduate of Limerick School of Art & Design, De Montfort University Leicester and the University of London. He currently lectures in Sculpture at the CIT Crawford College of Art in Cork, Ireland.
The gallery, located at 2429 St. Claude Ave., will host an opening reception on Saturday, August 13, from 6-9 p.m. The exhibition will run from August 13 – September 4, 2016.
